This web app uses an open-source javascript API called lame.js. It does the job locally on your machine, meaning your file will NOT be sent to any remote servers. All the conversion operations are performed inside your browser and on your local machine. Moreover, we do NOT store any of your files in any remote locations. Everything happens locally on your machine which is very important for your privacy and security.

To work with this web app, either drag and drop media file(s) in the above input area, or click on the input area to open the file I/O window and then select your files from there. You will see items are listed below the file selector box. Then, click on the convert button to convert a file to mp3. Once the conversion is done, you can click on the download button to download the file to your system or remove the item by clicking on the delete button.

There are also some optional setting which you can adjust for this app. For example, audio bitrate, sample rate, and audio channels. Moreover, you can trim the audio for a specific period.

Convert to MP3 app is also available as a browser extension. As an extension, this app does not need an internet connection and can be used offline in your browser. Download links for three popular browsers are as follows: Chrome, Opera, Firefox.

Technical notes about MP3 file format

MP3 files are the most commonly used and popular format for storing an audio file. It was created by The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). This digital music format is used for making high-quality sound files. With this format, the way people listen to music has changed. MP3 utilizes a compression algorithm; this is a great way to decrease the size of the file. For example, a waveform audio file (WAV) is a lossless file that might be nearly 30MB in size, whereas this same file in MP3 format might be of 3MB in size. Unfortunately, some information is lost when converting the audio file to .mp3. During the compression, some of the data is lost; this is why it is known as a lossy format. Yet, the quality of the sound is great. Another disadvantage of the conversion is the bit rate. The bit rate is the audio data that is produced every second. It is measured in kilobits per second (kbps). The higher the bit rate, the better the quality of the sound. The compression of the audio file will remove the parts of the file that people might have a challenging time hearing. This removal of the audio file is not noticeable to the average listener.

Since MP3 is the best audio file format, all the audio applications are capable of opening it. Whether you are a Windows user or a macOS user, you can easily play the MP3 file without having to download any software. When it comes to Windows 10, the default player for MP3 audio files is Windows Media Player. While in MacOS, iTunes is the default player. Opening an MP3 file is extremely simple and easy. All you have to do is double click on the file you want to play. The default player will open the file. On the other hand, you can even right-click on the file you want to listen to. Click on open and the default player will play that file. However, if you want to open the file in any other audio player, the process is simple. You just have to right-click on the file. Then go to - Open With - option on the drop-down menu and choose the player you want to open the audio file in. An important thing you need to keep in mind is that whenever you install a new music app or audio player, the app will automatically claim the association with the MP3 files when downloading.
